A Roaring Experience: Learning Compassion at the RAWR Sanctuary

Experience an unforgettable virtual field trip to the RAWR Sanctuary, where curious minds, compassionate caretakers, and majestic rescued animals rescued came together. This educational journey brought classroom lessons to life and inspired students to think deeper about animal welfare, ecology, and advocacy.

K-12 grade students across the country logged in for a one-of-a-kind experience, meeting incredible animals and the team that cares for them. Though we weren’t physically there, the connection, learning, and excitement were just as real.

Located in Providence, Rhode Island, the Rustic Acres Wildcat Rescue Sanctuary (RAWR) offers a haven for wild and domestic cats rescued from neglect or improper ownership. This GFAS-verified sanctuary (the first wildcat sanctuary in Rhode Island to earn this recognition) provides lifelong care to wild cats who cannot return to the wild. From 6 big beautiful bobcats to 10 domestic cats, the sanctuary is home to cats who now live with dignity and care. At the sanctuary, they believe wildcats should stay wild. As striking or lovable as they may seem, they aren’t pets and should be treated as such. RAWR maintains itself as a no-contact refuge for its cats that is not open to the public.

The cats are given the space and care they need to live as naturally as possible, while helping the public understand why respecting nature is so important. During our virtual visit, K-12 students were guided by RAWR’s passionate founder and executive director, Karle Busse, to get an inside look at the furry residents.

Learning Gone Wildcat

RAWR’s mission is rooted in education, compassion, and advocacy. This this experience gave students a front-row seat to the real-life impact of animal rescue and ethical wildlife care. Students learned from an interactive experience aligned with themes like:

Animal care & enrichment: RAWR creates natural-style habitats, offers species-specific diets, and provides mental stimulation (like scent mats and climbing platforms).

Conservation lessons: Understanding the impact of illegal wildlife pet trade and learning how shelters aid in animal welfare.

Ethics & empathy: Emphasizing respect for animals’ wild nature and prompting students to think critically about human-animal relationships.

While students observed the cats in their habitats, Karle shared insights into how bobcats thrive in the wild versus captivity. Karle also shared how enrichment helps with recovery and why sanctuaries play a vital role in global conservation efforts. Students met resident bobcats Meemie and Manka, participated in a live Q&A session, and watched the bobcats enjoy a special treat – chicken drumsticks!

Fun Facts About Bobcats

Tiny Tail, Big Personality: Bobcats get their name from their short “bobbed” tails, which are usually just 4-7 inches long!

Wild and Widespread: Bobcats live in almost every U.S. state. You might find them in woods, swamps, deserts, and even near suburban neighborhoods!

Night Owls (Sort Of!): Bobcats are crepuscular, which means they’re most active at dawn and dusk

Rescued Bobcats Can’t Go Back: If raised by humans, orphaned bobcats often can’t survive in the wild. They miss out on learning how to hunt or fear people.

Not Picky Eaters: Bobcats will eat whatever prey is available! From rabbits and rodents to birds, reptiles, and even small deer.
